00:00:37.228 --> 00:00:38.947
Now on to the show.
00:00:38.947 --> 00:00:43.610
Hey friends, welcome back to another episode of Organized Chaos.
00:00:44.222 --> 00:00:55.448
So if you're juggling a million things right now, like work, business, kids, laundry, the endless to-do list, you're in the right place, because today we're actually flipping the script a bit.
00:00:55.448 --> 00:01:09.192
We talk a lot about time management on this podcast and, in fact, just a little plug if you go to OrganizeChaosPodcastcom, you'll see all of the episodes for this podcast and a ton of resources.
00:01:09.192 --> 00:01:12.784
But one of the things that I've been doing is actually categorizing my episodes.
00:01:12.784 --> 00:01:21.361
So if you're looking for something specific like time management, you can go and you'll see most of the podcast episodes that have to do with that specific topic.
00:01:21.361 --> 00:01:25.168
I'm still working on getting all of the episodes because it's almost 300.
00:01:25.168 --> 00:01:33.781
So it's going to take me a little bit of time, but if you're looking for something specific, you'll be able to go there instead of just going to a podcast platform that doesn't have it that way.
00:01:33.781 --> 00:01:41.423
So if you're looking for something specific like mindset or habits and routines, just go to my website and you'll be able to find them right away.
00:01:41.423 --> 00:01:52.903
So, like I said, we talk a lot about time management on this podcast, but what if I told you that managing your energy is actually way more important than managing your time?
00:01:52.903 --> 00:02:02.450
So you can have all the time in the world, but if your energy is on empty, nothing's going to get done and you'll just end up feeling drained.
00:02:02.450 --> 00:02:08.361
I've been there too, and you'll just end up feeling drained.
00:02:08.361 --> 00:02:14.413
I've been there too, trying to power through when my energy tank is flashing red, like when your gas tank is empty, by the way, does that happen to everybody?
00:02:14.413 --> 00:02:21.580
You wait until the last minute and then you see, oh, I need gas and you're far away from gas station, anyway.
00:02:21.580 --> 00:02:27.842
So that's kind of how we ignore the fact that we don't put into our energy management.
00:02:27.842 --> 00:02:29.689
We're just thinking about time.
00:02:29.689 --> 00:02:42.247
So today we're going to dive into how to manage your energy your physical, emotional, mental and even spiritual energy so you can feel more in control, more productive and just generally better.
00:02:42.247 --> 00:02:43.770
All right, so let's jump in.
00:02:44.251 --> 00:02:45.593
So first things first.
00:02:45.593 --> 00:02:47.384
What the heck is energy management?
00:02:47.384 --> 00:02:50.316
It's pretty much exactly what it sounds like.
00:02:50.316 --> 00:03:06.020
It's about being intentional with energy rather than just trying to squeeze more hours out of the day and yes, we know we all have 24 hours in the day and it's what you do with your energy really during those hours that makes a difference.
00:03:06.020 --> 00:03:11.782
But let's think about it this way we have different types of energy that we use every single day.
00:03:12.362 --> 00:03:14.049
So there's the physical energy.
00:03:14.049 --> 00:03:21.633
This is your body's ability to keep up with the demands of the day, so it's about how well you feel and rest your body.
00:03:21.633 --> 00:03:23.719
And then there's emotional energy.
00:03:23.719 --> 00:03:29.294
This is how you're feeling emotionally, your mood and how you react to the things around you.
00:03:29.294 --> 00:03:31.000
And then there's mental energy.
00:03:31.000 --> 00:03:34.828
This is the ability to focus, concentrate and think clearly.
00:03:34.828 --> 00:03:40.145
When you're feeling mentally drained, even the simplest task can feel overwhelming.
00:03:40.145 --> 00:03:42.251
And then there's spiritual energy.
00:03:42.251 --> 00:03:44.561
This is kind of how I see it.
00:03:44.561 --> 00:03:47.201
This is like the sense of purpose, your why.
00:03:47.201 --> 00:03:50.984
It's that feeling of connection to something bigger than yourself.
00:03:50.984 --> 00:03:53.705
So take a moment and just think about that.
00:03:54.145 --> 00:03:58.247
Which of these types of energy feels the most depleted for you right now?
00:03:58.247 --> 00:04:01.270
For me, it's often mental energy.
00:04:01.270 --> 00:04:11.818
Between running a business I mean keeping up with the kids and like everything in between, it's easy for my brain to feel like it's running on fumes.
00:04:11.818 --> 00:04:23.394
Midday that slump that you feel like three o'clock, that is because your mental energy is super drained, and it's not always the physical energy.
00:04:23.394 --> 00:04:37.276
I mean, it could be a combination, but we think so much and we have so much mental load that it can create this physical reaction that you feel like you need to take a nap because it's just too much.
00:04:38.199 --> 00:04:44.795
So first I want to talk about like how can you identify what's called energy peaks and valleys?
00:04:44.795 --> 00:04:57.634
Have you ever noticed that there are certain times of the day when you feel like unstoppable and then there are times when even getting up from the couch feels like an Olympic sport?
00:04:57.634 --> 00:05:02.531
That's because we all have natural energy peaks and valleys throughout the day.
00:05:02.531 --> 00:05:16.684
For example, I wake up really early in the morning and I tackle certain things, and around 9 to 11 am is when I feel the most clarity and the most physical energy.
00:05:16.684 --> 00:05:27.622
Like I'm sitting right now doing this podcast and you can probably hear in my voice that I've got a lot of energy and I've got clarity and that is my universal prime time.
00:05:27.622 --> 00:05:36.317
That's when you have the most physical and mental energy, like the clarity, and you feel your best so you tackle the most important task.
00:05:36.317 --> 00:05:47.940
But as soon as like 2ish or 3pm that's around when I pick up the kids there's like this dreaded slump that comes in.
00:05:47.940 --> 00:05:52.956
That's when I need to switch gears and focus on tasks that are less mentally draining.
00:05:53.759 --> 00:05:58.898
And I have found that you know, we want to know how the kids' days have gone.
00:05:58.898 --> 00:06:01.430
Like we'll ask them like, hey, how was your day, how was school?
00:06:01.430 --> 00:06:04.458
And you know you'll get a I don't know.
00:06:04.458 --> 00:06:05.579
I was fine.
00:06:05.579 --> 00:06:07.264
You get some of those answers.
00:06:07.264 --> 00:06:19.050
But I kind of started to think a bit on the flip side, where the kids have spent I don't know, seven and a half hours at school and they're mentally drained, and then you start asking them these questions.
00:06:19.050 --> 00:06:22.355
They really don't wanna answer, they just wanna chill.
00:06:22.355 --> 00:06:33.072
And then later on during the night, like in the evening time, when they have more energy, then they want to talk about everything and that's when I'm like I don't have the capacity to do that.
00:06:33.132 --> 00:06:35.978
But we all, as humans, go through this.
00:06:35.978 --> 00:06:38.062
This is a really great exercise.
00:06:38.062 --> 00:06:42.295
Take like a week and track your energy levels throughout the day.
00:06:42.295 --> 00:06:46.824
Notice when you feel the most alert and when you feel like you're dragging.
00:06:46.824 --> 00:06:54.783
It can be super life-changing to like align your most important task with your energy peaks.
00:06:54.783 --> 00:06:59.480
Imagine trying to do your most creative work when you're running on empty.
00:06:59.480 --> 00:07:00.970
It's just not going to work.
00:07:00.970 --> 00:07:03.752
So, find that universal prime time for you.
00:07:03.752 --> 00:07:05.954
We all kind of have it, and we may have.
00:07:05.954 --> 00:07:06.995
Find that universal prime time for you.
00:07:06.995 --> 00:07:08.497
We all kind of have it, and we may have you know more than one.
00:07:08.497 --> 00:07:11.701
But just try and figure that out by tracking your energy levels.
00:07:12.281 --> 00:07:17.365
Okay, let's move on to maybe some strategies that can like boost or even protect your energy.
00:07:17.365 --> 00:07:25.699
So, because we can't just leave it up to chance, we need to figure this out.
00:07:25.699 --> 00:07:27.228
How do we actually boost that energy when we really need it?
00:07:27.228 --> 00:07:31.100
But first let me go into how do we replenish our energy.
00:07:31.100 --> 00:07:40.163
So this can be as simple as taking a five-minute stretch break, grabbing a glass of water or going for a quick walk outside.
00:07:40.163 --> 00:07:43.235
I like to call these like micro-recharges.
00:07:43.235 --> 00:07:47.363
It doesn't have to be like a big deal, it doesn't have to be this big event.
00:07:47.363 --> 00:07:50.995
Even the tiniest break can make a big difference.
00:07:50.995 --> 00:07:53.240
And then you want to guard your energy.
00:07:53.240 --> 00:07:58.978
So think of this like putting like a fence around your energy reserves.
00:07:58.978 --> 00:08:02.613
One of the best ways to do this is by setting boundaries.
00:08:02.613 --> 00:08:10.755
Maybe that means saying no to things that drain you, or carving out time in your day just for you, without the guilt.
00:08:11.338 --> 00:08:13.862
Let's talk about the energy vampires for a second.
00:08:13.862 --> 00:08:21.896
Now I read this book, the Energy Bus and I forget the author's name, but I'll put it in the show notes and he talks about energy vampires.
00:08:21.896 --> 00:08:27.146
So these are people or activities that just suck the life out of you.
00:08:27.146 --> 00:08:30.615
It's okay to limit your exposure to these things.
00:08:30.615 --> 00:08:35.331
Your energy is super important and it's precious, and you need to protect it.
00:08:35.331 --> 00:08:41.027
And then you want to fuel your energy, so find those activities that naturally give you a boost.
00:08:41.027 --> 00:08:46.135
For me, it's going for a walk or spending a few minutes journaling.
00:08:46.135 --> 00:08:48.918
It sets a positive tone for.
00:08:48.918 --> 00:08:50.941
So what about you?
00:08:50.941 --> 00:08:57.650
Maybe it's dancing in your kitchen or something, or maybe it's calling a friend, or it's listening to your favorite playlist.
00:08:57.650 --> 00:09:02.921
Whatever it is, make sure you're building it into your day, all right.
00:09:02.941 --> 00:09:08.107
So let's move on to how we can actually put this all together and create a plan.
00:09:08.107 --> 00:09:14.275
So here's a simple three-step plan for you so you can get started with managing your energy.
00:09:14.275 --> 00:09:18.264
Three-step plan for you so you can get started with managing your energy.
00:09:18.264 --> 00:09:20.508
So step number one is track your energy peaks and valleys Next week.
00:09:20.508 --> 00:09:24.081
Jot down when you feel energized and when you feel drained.
00:09:24.081 --> 00:09:26.830
You'll start to see kind of like this pattern.
00:09:26.830 --> 00:09:31.001
Step number two choose one energy boosting activity.
00:09:31.001 --> 00:09:35.472
So pick one small thing you can do every day to give yourself a boost.
00:09:35.472 --> 00:09:40.451
It could be as simple as a five-minute breathing exercise or a quick walk around the block.
00:09:40.451 --> 00:09:44.485
Step three is set energy boundaries.
00:09:44.485 --> 00:09:48.653
Protect your energy by setting a boundary as much as possible.
00:09:48.653 --> 00:09:55.860
Maybe it's turning off your phone an hour before you go to bed or saying no to some commitment that's going to drain you.
00:09:55.860 --> 00:10:01.616
It's all about, like, the really small changes that make the big impact over time.
00:10:01.616 --> 00:10:05.265
You don't have to overhaul your entire day to see results.
00:10:05.265 --> 00:10:07.129
You just start with one thing.
00:10:07.129 --> 00:10:08.841
All right, so let's recap.
00:10:09.422 --> 00:10:18.303
Today we talked about the difference between time management and energy management, about the difference between time management and energy management.
00:10:18.303 --> 00:10:18.825
So we talked about that.
00:10:18.825 --> 00:10:36.981
There's physical, emotional, mental and spiritual energy, and how to identify your natural energy peaks and valleys, like your universal prime time, and how that can help you work smarter and not harder, and we put together a simple little plan that can help you start managing your energy, starting today.
00:10:36.981 --> 00:10:45.082
Imagine if you could go throughout your day feeling energized and capable instead of drained and overwhelmed.
00:10:45.082 --> 00:10:51.621
It's totally possible and it all starts by being intentional about how you're using your energy.
00:10:52.303 --> 00:11:10.313
Now, this is part of my chi method, it's the I part intentionality, and I do this with my clients and we go through kind of like this energy management and it goes along with motivation, because so many times we go through life just going with the flow.
00:11:10.313 --> 00:11:14.370
Now we want to create a flow, but we don't just want to go with the flow.
00:11:14.370 --> 00:11:17.224
We want to feel energized and we want to feel motivated.
00:11:17.224 --> 00:11:24.725
So I do this specifically because many times when I get on sessions, people are taking action.
00:11:24.725 --> 00:11:33.589
They're just not taking either the right actions or they're taking actions with very low energy, and that makes a difference.
00:11:33.589 --> 00:11:42.373
It's not just about taking actions, it's about the way that you take those actions and the reason why behind you taking those actions.
00:11:42.373 --> 00:11:46.307
So I challenge you to try one of these strategies today.
00:11:46.927 --> 00:11:53.528
Maybe take a break when you're feeling an energy dip, or pick an energy boosting activity to add to your routine.
00:11:53.528 --> 00:11:56.014
All right, well, I hope that was helpful.
00:11:56.014 --> 00:11:57.686
Thank you so much for tuning in.
00:11:57.686 --> 00:12:05.764
If you found this episode really helped you, please take a moment to follow or leave a review, or send it to a friend.
00:12:05.764 --> 00:12:08.107
Remember you manage your energy.
00:12:08.107 --> 00:12:12.408
You're not just managing your day, you're changing the way you experience life.
00:12:12.408 --> 00:12:17.008
All right, I hope you have an amazing rest of your day and I'll see you next week.
